Tonhalle Zurich, 2015-10-17: Concert by the NWD Philharmonie under Yves Abel, featuring Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No.3 in D minor, op.30 (with Alexei Volodin as soloist) and Robert Schumann’s Symphony No.1 in B♭ major, op.38
The first part of this evening was devoted to Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No.3 in D minor, op.30 — a well-respected benchmark among pianists of the top league. Lise de la Salle played this concerto eloquently, with compassion — she visibly lived with the music, also in the orchestral parts: her playing is fluent, competent, aimed at a full, rounded sound…
(…) For this season (2014/15), the Chinese pianist Yuja Wang is “Artist in residence” at the Tonhalle. This position / title entails a number of concert (limited, though, considering the demand she faces all over the world), the first two of which were the opening concerts of the season, a third one was on Sunday, 2014-09-14, with chamber music: she was joined by two prominent musicians from the Tonhalle Orchestra…
Personal report on the Philharmonic Concert at Zurich Opera, 2013-12-22: Lise de la Salle and Fabio Luisi / Philharmonia Zurich — Rachmaninoff, Piano Concerto No.2 in C minor, op.18; Tchaikovsky: Symphony No.6 in B minor, op.74, “Pathétique”
(…) stunned by Han-Na Chang’s performance of the Haydn C major concerto (…). That performance dates back some 7 years (2005) — but she had recorded both Haydn concertos already back in 1998, when she was 16; in that YouTube performance, it was amazing to see not only her enormous technical skills, but also her freedom of expression, and how much she has detached herself from technicalities, how much she is totally relaxed and appears to enjoy her own playing while visually communicating with the orchestra…
