Concert review, Sebastian Bohren & José Gallardo @ Lukaskirche, Lucerne, 2018-09-13 — Stravinsky: Divertimento from “Le Baiser de la Fée”, for Violin and Piano; Beethoven: 12 Variations on Mozart’s aria “Se vuol ballare”, WoO 40; Bach: Chaconne from the Partita in D minor for Violin solo, BWV 1004; Strauss: Sonata for Violin and Piano in E♭ major, op.18
… it was fascinating to observe how the violin remained audible, kept a clear presence even through minimal, light movements of the bow (…)
In the subsequent Larghetto, the soloist enchanted the audience with the most intimate, whispering tones, played almost sul ponticello, with minute, discreet movements of the bow, merely a hint, but always present, down to the softest ppp and below — one could almost sense the audience holding breath, totally captured by this playing.
Rubinstein’s Recording Repertoire: J.S. Bach’s Chaconne in D minor (from the Partita for violin solo, BWV 1004), arranged for piano by Ferruccio Busoni
